
When you've got a roomfull of hunrgy kids, sometimes the easiest option is to throw cookies at them and turn on a movie. Resist this temptation! You can throw a fun party with healthy food that makes you and your kids feel good. But there are healthier ways to treat yourself, and other costumed revelers, to help avoid ending the party in a sugar haze.
Controlling what kids eat during a candy-focused party is no easy task. "It's wise to help kids to focus on the fun and to set some limits," says Dr. Luigi Gratton, vice president of medical affairs at Herbalife. "Make sure the kids have a healthy meal or snack before they leave, and negotiate ahead of time how much they'll be allowed to eat," he adds. Start the evening with a fun, healthy meal. Try offering ‘finger foods' such as:
- String cheese stick wrapped with a slice of turkey and topped with slivered almonds
- Fruit salad made with fresh oranges, raisins and dark grapes
- Healthy smoothies including berries, pumpkin or bananas
- "Ants on a Log," or celery topped with peanut butter and raisins
