Good nutrition means having a balanced diet, which incorporates all of the five food groups in healthy proportions. Each food group has a different role in making the body function properly, keeping your kids healthy and growing properly. The five food groups are:
Dairy: Milk, butter, yogurt, and cheese are all good sources of dairy. Kids need dairy in their diet as it contains calcium, which helps bones grow big and strong.
Protein: Meat, fish, cheese, nuts, beans and eggs are all sources of protein, is used to make the body grow and repair itself. Essential for your kids to grow tall and repair their cuts and bruises!
Carbohydrates: Bread, pasta, rice, bagels, noodles, quinoa, cereals, potatoes. All these foods are known as carbohydrates. They produce energy which helps keep your kids full and active!
Fruit and Vegetables: Apples, oranges, tomatoes, cucumber, carrots, lettuce, bananas,…All these fruit and vegetables are vital sources of vitamins, minerals and fibre. These help protect the body and maintain general body health (delighted digestive system, happy bones, and brilliant blood cells). It is advised to have at least 5 different portions of fruit and veg a day.
Saturated Fats and Artificial Sugars: Pies, sausages, cookies, crisps, and burgers all contain saturated fat. Saturated fat is bad for you because it clogs up your arteries. The same goes with artificially sweetened foods like ice cream, fizzy drinks and chocolate bars. Unfortunately, these are the types of food which are particularly loved by children, so limiting their intake of these foods can be tricky.

Saturated fats and artificial sugars are bad for your kids because they provide too much sugar for the body. As this sugar can’t all be turned into energy and burnt off straight away, a lot of it is turned into fat. If this happens, your kids can gain weight and, if they don’t exercise enough, can become obese. However, there are good fats and natural sugars which should be included in your kids’ diets.
Good (unsaturated) fats: These include foods which contain natural oils like olive and vegetable oils, oily fish, nuts, seeds and avocado.
Natural Sugars: Foods which are naturally sweet include fruit (such as apples, strawberries and dried apricots). Some vegetables also have natural sugar in them like carrots and beetroot (which is why these are used in cakes sometimes!
